PILLARS OF HERCULES 7'S

representing the Rock of Gibraltar

UPDATE: Dec 09
Thanks to the team who travelled to New York this year to defend the title. A spectacular weekend and some great rugby which saw us through to the 2009 final. Unfortunately it couldn´t be 2 in a row, but although we came second on the pitch, no doubt whatsoever that we dominated the NYC massive. POH

The name ‘Pillars of Hercules’ comes from the phrase that has been applied through history to the mountains that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. The northern Pillar being the Rock of Gibraltar, and the southern being the north african mountain peaks of Monte Hacho or Jebel Musa. According to Roman sources, while on his way to the island of Erytheia, Hercules had to cross the mountain that was once Atlas. Instead of climbing the great mountain, Hercules used his superhuman strength to smash through it. By doing so he connected the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and formed the Strait of Gibraltar and the Pillars of Hercules 7s Gibraltar rugby team. One part of the split mountain is Gibraltar, our home nation.

P.O.H have also been lucky enough to be able to call on the services of various international players including Iain Balshaw (Gloucester, England, British Lions, Barbarians and Pillars of Hercules) as coach, and Justin Marshall, the most capped All Black scrum half of all time (second most capped Pillars of Hercules scrum half) which has helped to enrich the team, and provide various opportunities for our more regular players to show these guys up!
